Jaipur: Street vendor associations in Jaipur now have a mobile application developed exclusively for them to maintain records of their members and also to provide them with legal assistance and awareness of their rights.
“The two municipal corporations of Jaipur have records of merely 20,000 street vendors, to whom they have issued identity cards. We boast a robust membership of over 25,000 out of approximately 60,000 street vendors in Jaipur.Primarily, this app will serve as a database for the 25,000 vendors affiliated with our unions. We can augment the numbers as and when necessary,” stated Banwari Lal Sharma, president of Heritage City Thadi-Thela Union.
In addition to this union, Sharma presides over nine to ten associations of street vendors in various areas across the city.
The mobile app – officially known as Jeevika – has been developed by Centre for Civil Society (CCS). It is a Delhi-based organisation that advocates for the rights of street vendors nationwide and has previously launched a similar app for street vendors in Delhi.
Members of the association declared that henceforth, all street vendors in the city will be required to register their details such as name, address, contact number, location, and nature (product for sale) of business on this app.
Once the street vendors register themselves on this app, they can access other features, such as lodging a complaint and even accessing emergency help. These will assist them in overcoming any difficulties they encounter on the streets of Jaipur.
“For instance, if enforcement wings of civic bodies or police are harassing them, they can send an alert through the emergency help section. Senior association members of that particular area will promptly reach the spot to assist them. The street vendors can also lodge complaints through this app, and our legal team can provide them with assistance,” added Sharma.
The app – with text entirely in Hindi – also contains copies of various Acts and rules pertaining to street vendors, to enable them to understand their rights as well as limitations.
