BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – St. Joseph Healthcare recently added a new piece of critical technology through its Surgical Robotics Program.
The new robotic surgical system was recently named “Pi” by Reeds Brook Middle School student Oskar Gerring.
On Friday, Oskar and his family got to get an up-close look at Pi and a chance to test out the robot themselves.
Pi has robotic arms that are controlled by a surgeon providing a less invasive way of doing surgery.
Oskar won a contest with the Challenger Learning Center in Bangor allowing him to choose the special name.
”I thought the number was really long and long-lasting, so I thought everyone’s life should be long-lasting. If they need a surgery that can save their life or anything minor then it would be like the number, it never ends,” said Oskar.
“We are really trying to promote to our young people, I mean Oskar is 12 years old, he’s already written a science fiction book, he’s really quite brilliant already. But helping them to understand healthcare and maybe have a potential career in healthcare,” said Mary Prybylo, President of St. Joseph Healthcare.
Oskar said after Friday he’s thinking when he grows up he wants to be a Doctor and work with surgical robots.
